The United Kingdom’s long-running Electronic Travel Authorisation rollout reaches its end-point today. As of 00:01 BST on 1 August 2026, every non-visa national — including EU and EEA citizens — must hold a valid ETA before boarding a carrier bound for the UK. Airlines, ferry operators and the rail company operating Eurostar are now legally obliged to check passengers’ permission-to-travel status or face penalties. The Home Office first signalled full enforcement in a Parliamentary Written Statement on 25 February 2026, after phased launches covering Gulf Cooperation Council nationals (2023), EU nationals (April 2025) and remaining cohorts earlier this year. According to the statement, more than 19.6 million ETAs had been granted by the start of 2026, giving the government confidence that carriers’ systems were ready for universal checks. For businesses, the change means overseas staff attending meetings or trade fairs must secure an ETA well before departure. The online application costs £10 and is usually approved in minutes, but the Home Office warns that incomplete data or name-passport mismatches will trigger manual reviews that could take up to 72 hours. Employers are therefore urged to build ETA lead-times into travel policies and to remind frequent flyers to link renewed passports to their UKVI accounts. From a compliance perspective, the ETA plugs straight into the Advance Passenger Information feed. Border Force expects this ‘up-stream’ security model to reduce queues at eGates because inadmissible travellers will be intercepted before boarding. However, the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration has cautioned that real-time carrier connectivity needs “constant stress-testing”, particularly at smaller regional airports and sea ports. Practical tip: HR and global mobility teams should update pre-travel checklists and educate employees that ETAs are multiple-entry and valid for two years or until passport expiry. Dual British citizens remain ineligible for an ETA and must travel on a UK passport or a digital Certificate of Entitlement.
