From 1 August 2026, British schools can once again take pupils to Germany without the administrative burden of individual Schengen visa applications. Under rules published by the German Embassy in London, children who are normally required to obtain a Schengen C-visa (for example third-country nationals studying in the United Kingdom) are now exempt if they travel on a certified “List of Travellers” and hold a valid UK residence permit. The measure implements the youth-mobility chapter of the German-British Kensington Treaty signed in July 2025, which committed both governments to restoring friction-free educational exchanges after Brexit. Teachers compile the names, passport numbers and UK immigration status of every participant on an official form. Once the list is stamped by the school and the German mission, it functions as a group travel document at the border. At least one teacher must accompany the group for the entire trip; pupils who split off from the tour lose the exemption and must carry a regular visa. For British schools, the change eliminates visa fees, biometric appointments and the logistical headache of collecting dozens of passports weeks in advance. Tour operators specialising in language exchanges and orchestra tours told Global Mobility News that the old visa requirement had reduced bookings by up to 40 percent; they expect demand to rebound quickly now that paperwork is back to pre-Brexit levels. German business groups have also welcomed the decision. “School exchanges are the pipeline for tomorrow’s bilingual engineers and managers,” said Dr Martina Böttcher of the Federation of German Industries. She urged the government to extend the model to university field trips and short research visits. Practical advice: schools should download the latest List-of-Travellers template from the Federal Interior Ministry website and apply at least two weeks before departure. Pupils must still carry their passports and UK Biometric Residence Permits. Irish and EU nationals on the trip can continue to use ID cards only.
