Ireland’s six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union moves into high gear this week with an informal meeting of Cohesion Policy Ministers at Dublin Castle on 14-15 September 2026. Transport for Ireland (TFI) has issued an alert warning of traffic diversions, intermittent road closures and public-transport delays in Dublin, Cork, Shannon and several regional airports as delegations move between venues. Although most restrictions are short—typically 15-30 minutes for motorcade movements—the National Transport Authority is advising commuters and visiting executives to build in at least an hour’s buffer when travelling to Dublin Airport or city-centre meetings. Private-hire vehicles and company shuttle buses will be directed to alternative set-down points on Dame Street and Christchurch during lock-downs around Dublin Castle. Over the next six weeks Ireland will host more than 40 EU events, including informal ECOFIN, Transport and Trade Ministers’ meetings. Hotels in the capital report occupancy above 90 per cent, driving room-rate inflation of 25 per cent year-on-year, according to Fáilte Ireland. Mobility managers are scrambling to re-route regional staff via Cork and Belfast airports where feasible. TFI’s Journey Planner and Live App will carry real-time disruption notices, while the daa says it will coordinate with Gardaí to avoid lane closures on the M1 during early-morning departure peaks. Businesses running pan-European workshops or investor days in Dublin are being urged to shift to virtual or hybrid formats if travel flexibility is limited. The Presidency, Ireland’s eighth, is expected to inject €120 million into the hospitality sector but comes with the logistical cost of rolling security cordons; the Transport Ministers’ gathering on 20-21 September is forecast to be the most disruptive, involving site visits to Dublin Port and a temporary exclusion zone on the River Liffey.
