EU Schengen Working Party convenes in Brussels to debate border-technology roll-out
The Council of the EU’s Working Party for Schengen Matters met on 15 September to review implementation timelines for next year’s Entry/Exit System and to examine risk assessments submitted by member states that still maintain internal controls—Poland among them. Delegates discussed Poland’s pilot of mobile biometric kiosks on international coaches operating the Warsaw–Berlin route and the legal framework for storing facial-image templates collected at land borders. The Commission urged capitals to finalise carrier-liability guidelines to avoid last-minute disruption to air and rail services. Minutes of the meeting will feed into the Justice and Home Affairs Council in October, where ministers are expected to set a definitive EES go-live window. Mobility managers with high intra-EU traffic should follow the outcome closely, as decisions on grace periods and carrier sanctions will directly affect check-in procedures and PNR data requirements.
