Poland prolongs internal Schengen controls with Germany and Lithuania until March 2027
An update posted on the European Commission’s Schengen monitoring portal on 14 September 2026 confirms that Poland will keep internal border controls with Germany and Lithuania from 2 October 2026 through 30 March 2027. The measure is justified by Warsaw as a response to “persistent migratory pressure” and security risks stemming from Russia’s war in Ukraine and ongoing Middle-East instability. In practice, travellers will continue to face spot checks on major road, rail and airport routes, with carriers obliged to verify identification before boarding. Although controls are selective, they can add 30–60 minutes to overland journeys—an unwelcome complication for daily cross-border commuters and supply-chain managers moving goods through the busy Świecko–Frankfurt (Oder) and Budzisko–Kalvarija corridors. Poland first reinstated the checks in April 2026 and has already extended them once. Under Schengen rules, reintroductions beyond 24 months are subject to Commission scrutiny, so Brussels will likely demand a detailed proportionality report. Businesses should document any significant delays, as evidence may prove useful in lobbying for mitigation measures such as “green lanes” for frequent travellers. Corporate mobility teams should advise employees to carry passports or national ID cards even on intra-EU trips and to build extra buffer time into travel schedules. Trucking and automotive clients may want to re-sequence just-in-time deliveries to avoid peak congestion hours identified in previous Border Guard traffic data.
