Australia’s long-awaited reset of its migration settings will be unveiled on Thursday, but key details leaked on the eve of the announcement already point to the biggest tightening of visa rules since the pandemic. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke will address the National Press Club under the banner “Who arrives, who stays, who leaves”, outlining reforms designed to push net-overseas-migration back towards Treasury forecasts without starving the economy of essential skills. According to senior government sources and briefings given to the media, the package will bar most international students from bringing spouses and children, curb the ability of temporary visa-holders to “visa-hop” after their status expires, and fast-track removals of overstayers. The move follows months of cabinet wrangling and comes amid a political pincer. On the right, One Nation has proposed an abrupt 750,000-place cut to temporary migration; on the left, business and universities warn that blunt caps could cost billions and damage Australia’s reputation. By focusing on dependants rather than primary student visas, Labor hopes to ease housing pressure while preserving the A$40 billion international education sector. Stakeholders are already crunching the numbers. In 2025-26 Australia issued 337,000 student visas, of which 45,000 went to family members. Modelling by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry suggests that removing dependants could reduce annual arrivals by 60,000–70,000 yet shave less than 0.1 percentage points off GDP growth, because primary students still spend and work part-time. Universities Australia, however, warns the change could deter mature-age applicants and shrink regional campus intakes. Practically, education providers will need to update marketing material within weeks; migration agents expect a surge of applications before the new rules take effect, likely on 1 January 2027. Employers that hire graduates on post-study work rights should prepare for stricter checks on compliance and a possible shortening of graduate visa duration. For global mobility managers, the headline is a harsher environment for dependants and less tolerance for “stay two years, switch visas” career paths. Companies sending staff to Australia may need to budget for separate family relocation or staggered arrivals.
