Federal funding announcement scheduled for Windsor International Airport expansion
Transport Canada has issued a media advisory stating that Parliamentary Secretary Mike Kelloway will unveil new federal investments for Windsor International Airport on 16 September 2026. Local officials, including Windsor’s mayor Drew Dilkens, will attend the onsite event. Although dollar figures were not disclosed ahead of the announcement, regional stakeholders have long lobbied for apron expansion and upgraded customs facilities to attract more trans-border flights. For mobility managers, improved capacity at Windsor offers an alternative to Detroit Metropolitan Airport for cross-border assignments in the automotive corridor, potentially reducing ground-transfer times and U.S. cabotage complications. The airport already handles charter traffic for the Gordie Howe International Bridge construction workforce. Additional federal funding is expected to modernise passenger screening lanes and install advanced baggage systems compatible with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) requirements, making same-day business trips more seamless. Companies with operations in Southwestern Ontario should track the project timeline and engage with airport authorities on slot availability and corporate-rate agreements once construction details are confirmed.
