Applicants for Irish visas, residence renewals and citizenship often find themselves bouncing between two different websites—the Immigration Customer Service Portal and the INIS Online system. In a 15 September explainer, the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) set out clear guidance on what each platform does and how to avoid common mistakes that lead to processing delays. The Customer Service Portal (portal.irishimmigration.ie) is the front door for first-time GNIB/IRP registration appointments in Dublin, for checking application status and for submitting queries or forms such as Reactivation Employment Permit or Parent of an Irish Citizen Child. The INIS Online site (inisonline.jahs.ie) on the other hand handles online IRP renewals, citizenship applications, the Atypical Working Scheme and several specialised residence permissions. Each requires separate log-in credentials and supports different document formats. MRCI highlights that recent security upgrades—including mandatory multi-factor authentication introduced by Immigration Service Delivery in August—have locked out users who had not updated contact details. The NGO advises mobility managers to circulate updated step-by-step guides to assignees and dependants, stressing the need to maintain accounts on both platforms. For employers, the distinction is more than academic: using the wrong portal can delay residence renewals, leading to gaps in work permission and potential right-to-work breaches. MRCI urges HR teams to bookmark the ISD’s “Latest Visa Decisions” feed and to verify which portal a particular form must be lodged through before instructing staff. While the Department of Justice is reportedly working on a single sign-on solution, no launch date has been confirmed. Until then, proactive training and process maps remain the best defence against avoidable delays in Ireland’s increasingly digital immigration system.
