During the closure, PSPC recommends alternate crossings—the Portage, Chaudière and Macdonald-Cartier bridges—although these routes already suffer peak-hour congestion. Hotels in Gatineau have warned guests to budget an extra 30-45 minutes for airport transfers to Ottawa International Airport. Ride-share operators anticipate surge pricing throughout the weekend. Event-related bridge closures are becoming more common as Canada’s National Capital Region positions itself as a hub for mass-participation events. PSPC says a long-term refurbishment of the 122-year-old bridge is scheduled for 2027-2031, during which extended closures could further affect cross-provincial commuting patterns.
