Coast-Guard boarding teams carried out 202 foreign-national inspections in Finnish ports—almost on par with the previous week—and opened nine new criminal investigations, including cases of organised facilitation of illegal entry and breaches of entry bans. The bulletin notes that Helsinki-Vantaa Airport processed 91,772 passport checks during the week, an increase of roughly 300 compared with Week 37, while asylum applications at the airport dropped to just one (from eight). Eight travellers were refused entry or turned back. Maritime patrols also intercepted an attempted sea crossing from Russia to Finland near Virolahti, highlighting the multidirectional nature of the pressure on Finland’s external borders. Finnish authorities have intensified joint operations with their Estonian counterparts, sharing live intelligence feeds from Tallinn harbour CCTV and Automated Identification System (AIS) data. The Coast Guard also participated in the EU-wide maritime-security exercise MARSEC EU26 LIVEX 2, which tested coordination between border, police and naval units. Analysts say these drills help Finland prepare for the full, EU-mandated Entry/Exit System (EES) checks that are already in a six-month transition phase at seaports and airports. For corporate mobility and travel-management teams, the bulletin is a reminder that identity screening in Finnish ports and airports remains robust and may tighten further without notice. Travellers arriving by ferry from Estonia should expect spot checks of travel documents, purpose-of-stay questions and potential delays during peak sailings. In the medium term, sustained enforcement could discourage criminal networks but may also slow freight and commuter flows on one of the Nordic region’s busiest business corridors.
