The carrier currently operates the route three times weekly with Airbus A330-900s, providing one of the few direct links between Europe and China’s Hainan Free-Trade Port. The airline cites network optimisation and aircraft utilisation for the cut, though softer-than-expected advance bookings following China’s post-pandemic reopening are believed to be a factor. Lufthansa Group’s upcoming winter-season frequency additions to both Bangkok and Hong Kong will further squeeze demand for a one-stop leisure routing to Sanya. For tour operators selling Hainan beach packages to European winter-sun seekers, the withdrawal removes a convenient lift. Passengers will have to connect via Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong, potentially adding cost and transit-visa steps. On the cargo side, the decision trims belly-hold capacity for high-value duty-free merchandise moving from Hainan’s bonded zones to Germany. Hainan provincial authorities have aggressively courted foreign carriers with fee waivers and marketing subsidies, but Condor’s exit underscores the island’s challenge in sustaining long-haul capacity without a substantial corporate travel base. Businesses with expatriate staff in Sanya should review medevac and emergency-travel contingencies once the route ends.
