Unable to pay on the spot, the passenger began a 30-day custodial sentence the same morning. The incident is typical of daily enforcement activity along Germany’s western borders, where mobile controls target buses, trains and private vehicles for irregular migration, people smuggling and outstanding criminal fines. Since internal checks resumed, Bundespolizei statistics show more than 7,500 apprehensions and €2.8 million in collected fines at the Dutch frontier alone. For corporate mobility teams, the episode underscores that Schengen’s principle of free movement remains subject to ad-hoc controls that can delay scheduled services.
