Dozens refused entry at Poland–Ukraine crossings for lacking visas and onward plans
The Bieszczady branch of the Polish Border Guard announced on 24 September 2026 that it continues to turn away “several dozen” travellers each day who arrive at south-eastern road checkpoints without the documentation or itinerary required for Schengen entry. Recent cases included a Colombian man and a Paraguayan woman attempting a spontaneous European tour after meeting in Lviv, and a Tajikistani citizen who tried to leave Ukraine for Poland visa-free. Officers at Malhowice and Budomierz border posts reported that the trio could not articulate their travel purpose, present accommodation bookings or demonstrate sufficient funds. All three were issued immediate refusal-of-entry decisions and redirected to Ukrainian territory under Article 14 of the Schengen Borders Code. The update highlights Poland’s tighter scrutiny of third-country nationals arriving from Ukraine amid concerns about secondary migration routes. Since the start of 2026, the Bieszczady unit alone has denied entry to more than 7,000 people, most for administrative breaches such as missing visas, overstays or incoherent travel plans. For employers relocating staff through eastern Europe, the message is clear: even bona-fide tourists must carry proof of purpose, means and accommodation. HR and travel teams should brief mobile employees—especially citizens of Latin American and Central Asian countries that lack visa-waiver agreements with the EU—to prepare comprehensive documentation at land borders. From an operational standpoint, sustained high refusal rates may lengthen queues at busy crossings like Korczowa–Krakovets. Logistics firms and coach operators should factor possible delays into schedules, particularly as autumn holiday traffic builds.
