China’s two dominant mobile-payment giants have quietly completed a back-end overhaul that lets visitors link more than 50 overseas e-wallets and card schemes directly to Alipay+ and WeChat Pay – a move designed to eliminate one of the biggest friction points for business travellers. The South China Morning Post reports that foreign tourists are already using the new functionality to pay for taxis, restaurants and train tickets without needing a Chinese bank account. Under the upgrade, users can register with an email address, upload passport details and bind an international Visa, MasterCard or regional wallet such as South Korea’s Kakao Pay or Thailand’s TrueMoney. Transaction fees have been capped at 3 %, and spending limits raised to ¥50,000 per trip, aligning with China’s anti-money-laundering thresholds. The rollout is part of a broader campaign by the People’s Bank of China and Ant International to prepare for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen this November, where tens of thousands of delegates are expected. For mobility managers, the change removes the need to pre-arrange cash advances or local bank accounts for short-term assignees. It also simplifies reimbursement: electronic receipts generated in English can be exported into most expense-management platforms. Merchants in 31 pilot cities have received NFC readers that automatically recognise foreign wallets, reducing queue times at transit gates and convenience stores. Experts note, however, that users must still complete a one-time real-name verification when the cumulative spend exceeds ¥5,000. Companies should brief travellers on data-privacy settings and recommend activating two-factor authentication. In parallel, China UnionPay is expanding acceptance of foreign e-wallets on its QuickPass network, giving visitors a second cash-less option in case of app outages. The payments overhaul complements recent visa-free extensions for 12 European countries and improved VAT refund channels, signalling Beijing’s intent to make inbound travel – and spending – as friction-free as possible in the run-up to a packed calendar of international conferences.
