Engineering, construction and tech vacancies surge – Finland signals opportunities for foreign talent

A data deep-dive published by Verkkouutiset, based on job board Duunitori’s latest statistics, shows a double-digit rise in postings for engineering, construction and maintenance roles in August compared with the same month last year. Industrial vacancies jumped 13 %, building trades 11 % and equipment-maintenance roles 7 %. Postings for data analysts and other tech profiles also trended upward, while retail recorded its first increase in two years. Although overall ad volumes remain flat at roughly 23 000 per month, the sectoral split matters for global-mobility teams: these are fields in which Finland already issues the largest number of work-based residence permits, especially via the fast-track “specialist” and EU Blue Card channels. Tech and heavy-industry employers warned at last week’s Business Finland road-show that domestic graduate output cannot meet demand created by the green-transition investments in battery chemicals, wind-farm maintenance and smart-factory retrofits. Recruiters expect the rebound to accelerate once the new digital permit process—now averaging 10 days for specialists—expands to skilled blue-collar trades in early 2027. “We’re advising clients to line up third-country candidates now, because collective-agreement wages in many of these shortage occupations comfortably exceed the Migri income thresholds,” says relocation lawyer Antti Koskinen. For intra-corporate transferees, the data indicate that project secondments to Finland may stretch longer than planned as firms struggle to localise headcount. HR should ensure that posted workers rotate before hitting the 183-day tax threshold or obtain A1 certificates to avoid double social-security contributions. The message is clear: Finland’s labour market is tightening in sectors central to its net-zero agenda, and immigration pathways will remain critical to meeting project timelines and safeguarding competitiveness.
