Fresh statistics published by the Italian Interior Ministry on 1 October reveal that 22,891 migrants reached Italian shores between January and September—a drop of 55.75 % compared with the same period in 2025. The sharp decline comes despite continued instability in Libya, which remains the point of departure for nearly 78 % of boats. Analysts attribute the fall to a combination of factors: stepped-up Libyan Coast Guard interceptions, expanded Italian navy patrols, and the seasonal impact of harsher Mediterranean conditions. The figures also confirm a strategic shift; Algeria has overtaken Tunisia as the second-largest launch pad, feeding a spike in small-craft landings on Sardinia’s southern coast. From a corporate-mobility standpoint the lower arrival numbers ease pressure on Italy’s reception system and reduce the chance of ad-hoc policy responses—such as mass-regularisation schemes—that can complicate immigration compliance. Nevertheless, Interior Minister Piantedosi told parliament that Italy carried out more than 6,500 forced or assisted voluntary returns this year and is accelerating plans for five new detention centres. Mobility advisers should therefore monitor regional permit offices, which may redeploy staff from asylum processing to work-permit desks, improving service times. The data also shed light on the nationalities most represented among arrivals: Bangladeshis lead (5,685), followed by Algerians (2,721) and Somalis (2,652). Employers considering recruitment from these talent pools should be aware that asylum backlogs for these groups remain high, affecting availability for legal labour channels.
