Passport-stamp checks end today as Schengen Entry/Exit System reaches new milestone
Beginning 7 October 2026, airlines, ferry operators and international coach companies flying or driving to Switzerland and the wider Schengen area no longer have to examine manual passport stamps to verify previous entries. The change marks the final operational switch-over to the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which has been phased in since October 2025 and became fully mandatory for carriers on 10 April 2026. According to the latest carrier guidance issued by the EU Agency eu-LISA, operators had to continue stamp-verifications until 6 October 2026; from today those checks cease and are replaced by an automated query to the EES carrier interface. The electronic system records every entry and exit of non-EU/EFTA travellers—including at Swiss airports and land borders—using facial images and fingerprints, instantly calculating remaining days of stay under the 90/180-day rule. For businesses moving staff in and out of Switzerland, the milestone should translate into faster boarding-gate procedures and fewer last-minute refusals. Carriers now receive an immediate ‘green’ or ‘red’ response indicating whether a traveller holding a single- or double-entry visa has already used up their permitted entries, reducing reliance on sometimes-illegible ink stamps. Swiss border authorities will continue to stamp passports only in exceptional circumstances during the transition. HR and travel managers should update employee travel briefs: third-country assignees entering Switzerland for short stays must expect biometric capture if they have not crossed a Schengen external border since 12 October 2025. At the same time, the abolition of stamp-checks means overstays will be detected automatically—making meticulous itinerary planning more critical than ever.
