Czech Embassy in Abuja switches to email-only appointment requests for Schengen business and sports visas
The Czech Embassy in Abuja has overhauled the way applicants book times to lodge short-stay Schengen visa applications. According to a notice published on October 6, 2026, companies, sports clubs and other Czech organisations inviting Nigerian nationals for business negotiations, professional sports, cultural events, internships or conferences must now request appointments exclusively by email. The inviting Czech entity must send a message to abuja.consulate@mzv.gov.cz listing each traveller’s full name, purpose of trip and proposed travel dates. Embassy staff will then assign the first available slot—typically within two weeks—subject to capacity. The change eliminates the need for invitees in Nigeria to compete for limited online booking windows, a system that had become notorious for scalpers and long wait times. By shifting responsibility to the Czech sponsor, Prague hopes to prioritise trips with demonstrable commercial or professional value while deterring opportunistic or incomplete applications. The reform also aligns Abuja with recent pilot schemes in India and China where Czech consulates have delegated appointment scheduling to vetted local partners. Tourism, family-visit, airport-transit and medical-treatment cases are not affected. Applicants in those categories must continue to register through the embassy’s existing online platform on designated registration days; the next round opens on 15 October between 08:00 and 14:00 CEST. Long-term visa and residence-permit procedures as well as document super-legalisation remain unchanged. For multinational employers moving staff between West Africa and Central Europe, the new rule provides much-needed predictability. HR managers can now coordinate travel plans directly with Czech partners instead of relying on assignees to secure scarce slots. Sports agents in particular are expected to benefit as Nigerian footballers routinely travel to Czech clubs for trials and league matches. Companies are advised to keep written evidence of the invitation email and the embassy’s confirmation in case border officials request proof of appointment during departure checks. The embassy emphasises that it will not honour any appointments brokered by third-party agents or forged emails. All correspondence must originate from the Czech host organisation’s official domain. Firms that fail to follow the procedure risk delayed travel or outright refusal of the visa application.
