No major transport strikes in Germany today, but Saarbahn action continues
Germany’s much-watched StrikeTracker portal reports that, as of Wednesday, 7 October 2026, there are no nation-wide walkouts affecting airlines, long-distance trains or airports. The only industrial action currently active is a localised strike by members of the GDL train-drivers' union at Saarbahn, the tram-train operator serving Saarbrücken and its cross-border hinterland. The limited action means ICE, IC and regional Deutsche Bahn services are running to normal schedules, and Lufthansa’s flight programme is unaffected after a tentative truce in wage talks with the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union. For mobility managers, this provides welcome breathing space after months of intermittent stoppages that have forced costly re-routing and hotel accommodation for travelling staff. Nevertheless, the continued dispute in Saarland is a reminder that Germany’s complex collective-bargaining landscape can trigger sudden disruptions. Saarbahn connects to the French TER network at Sarreguemines, so the strike also impacts commuters crossing the Franco-German border. Companies with operations in the automotive and steel clusters around Saarbrücken should advise employees to switch to bus replacement services or telework where possible. Under German passenger-rights rules, travellers whose local tickets are rendered unusable by a strike can claim refunds or choose alternative transport. Employers should ensure receipts are kept so that additional expenses can be reclaimed through travel-insurance policies or cost-centre accounting. While today is calm, both the Verdi public-sector union and the EVG rail union have open wage rounds this autumn. The risk of broader walkouts therefore remains high in Q4 2026, and contingency plans—such as flexible meeting formats and pre-approved car-rental contracts—should stay in place.
