Finavia warns of record autumn-holiday crowds at Helsinki Airport
Finavia, the state-owned operator of Finland’s airports, says Helsinki-Vantaa is heading into its busiest three-week spell since before the pandemic. According to guidance published on 4 October, passenger numbers are expected to surge between 8 – 25 October as Finnish schools take their staggered “syysloma” (autumn break). Historically the holiday pushes daily traffic 20–30 % above the October average, but this year Finavia forecasts volumes to exceed even 2019 levels because corporate travel has largely normalised and leisure demand remains high. The company pin-points two critical peaks: the outbound wave from Thursday 8 October through Monday 12 October, when many families start their holiday, and the inbound wave on Sunday 18 October and Monday 19 October. At Helsinki-Vantaa those days could see more than 65 000 departing passengers—roughly one every 1.3 seconds during operational hours. Finavia therefore urges travellers to arrive at least three hours before long-haul flights and two hours before European departures, even though the airport’s new CT scanners mean liquids and laptops can stay in hand luggage at security. Finavia adds that Lapland airports—especially Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo—will feel the pressure as domestic tourists chase autumn colours while international connections feed through Helsinki. The operator is doubling staffing at security, opening all check-in islands and reserving additional coach parking to keep kerbsides clear. Airlines have been asked to remind passengers of remote check-in options and baggage rules (power banks in cabin baggage, lighters never in hold baggage) to minimise last-minute surprises. For business-travel managers the advice is clear: schedule meetings outside the two peak weekends if possible, pad itineraries with extra connection time, and encourage employees to use Fast Lane security (included in many corporate fares). Companies sending equipment samples should choose cargo rather than excess baggage to avoid queueing at oversize counters. Employers should also remind staff that Finavia’s parking garages are likely to reach capacity and that train or bus links from Helsinki Central Station are the most reliable way to the airport during the rush. If the projections prove accurate, the coming weeks will be a significant stress-test for Finland’s flagship hub ahead of the winter season—when the country plans to welcome record numbers of Asian tourists on newly relaunched long-haul routes. Smooth performance now will strengthen Helsinki’s brand as a hassle-free transfer point and bolster the case for further route expansion in 2027.
