Spain reintroduces border checks with Italy—what it means for Czech business travellers
The European Commission’s Schengen monitoring portal was updated on 8 October 2026 to reflect Spain’s decision to reinstate temporary internal-border controls at all air and sea crossings from Italy between 8 and 22 October. Madrid cites continued pressure from irregular migration flows and secondary movements within the Schengen Area. While the measure targets Spain–Italy routes, its ripple effects will be felt across Europe, including the Czech Republic. Prague–Rome is a common connection point for Czech executives flying to Spanish hubs such as Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao. Travellers transiting via Italy should therefore budget extra time for Spanish immigration checks upon arrival and ensure they carry a valid passport or national ID—even though both countries belong to Schengen. Airlines operating Prague–Barcelona and Prague–Madrid direct services report no schedule changes but advise passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier than usual at the departure gate to accommodate document verification. Companies running tight itineraries for trade-fair season in Valencia and Zaragoza may want to shift staff onto direct flights or route them through Frankfurt to avoid potential bottlenecks at Spanish desks. Czech tour operators have updated their terms to include possible delays and recommend that travellers whose passports expire before April 2027 renew them before departure. Holders of Czech residence permits of non-EU nationality are reminded to carry both their passport and valid Czech biometric residence card to avoid secondary questioning. Under the Schengen Borders Code, Spain must lift the controls by 22 October unless it demonstrates an ongoing serious threat. If extended, the Commission will review proportionality. Mobility managers should monitor the Commission’s notification page and consider inserting contingency clauses in October travel authorisations covering missed connections and overnight accommodation.
