Record Night of Landings Pushes Lampedusa Hotspot Near Capacity Again
A calm spell on the Strait of Sicily was enough to unleash another wave of migrant boats towards Lampedusa overnight. Between midnight and 08:00 on 8 October, Italian coast-guard and customs vessels intercepted eight craft carrying a total of 372 people; by late evening the tally had risen to 301 arrivals in just five separate landings, according to local newspaper La Sicilia. Nationalities ranged from Bengalis and Egyptians to Sudanese, Ivorians and Malians, illustrating the increasingly mixed flows now converging on Italy’s most southerly island. The hotspot in contrada Imbriacola, designed for 400, was holding 1,208 people on Thursday morning despite two humanitarian flights organised by IOM that transferred 360 migrants to Bari and Bergamo in the previous 24 hours. A navy logistics ship, Cassiopea, has been dispatched to act as an offshore accommodation and transfer platform—an emergency measure last used in September when daily arrivals briefly topped 1,500. Rome has framed the surge as part of a broader Mediterranean security challenge. Interior-ministerial sources link the spike to the partial collapse of a militia truce on the Libyan coast that had until recently suppressed departures from Sabratah and Zuwara. NGOs operating rescue ships, such as Open Arms’ Astral, dispute the narrative, arguing that the increase is driven by calmer seas and a backlog of migrants already waiting in Libya and Tunisia. For municipalities beyond Sicily the pressure is equally real. Regional prefectures have issued urgent calls for temporary reception places, and at least three northern regions (Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna) have activated civil-protection protocols to convert unused school gyms into dormitories for single men. Employers in seasonal agriculture are already lobbying for fast-track work permits so that new arrivals can fill labour gaps in the autumn harvest. From a compliance standpoint, companies seeking to hire asylum seekers must remember that the 90-day grace period before employment eligibility still applies under Legislative Decree 142/2015. In practice HR teams should expect first work permissions only after early January 2027, unless the government triggers the derogation clause allowing access to the labour market after 30 days—an option currently under discussion in the Council of Ministers.
