Air Canada Launches Embarq, a Free Business-Travel Platform for Canadian SMBs
Air Canada has moved decisively into the small-business travel market with yesterday’s launch of Air Canada Embarq, a self-serve booking and reporting portal aimed at companies with no dedicated travel management team. The platform, developed with tech partners ZS and Traverse (ARC), lets any Canadian-registered small or medium-sized enterprise or non-profit enrol at no cost and book flights directly on aircanada.com under a new “Business travel” toggle. Bookings are automatically tracked to the company account, giving travel managers real-time dashboards, downloadable spend reports and a live map that shows where employees are. The carrier is dangling generous launch incentives. Until 10 December 2026, enrolled travellers earn 50 % more Aeroplan points on eligible itineraries, while the company saves 2-5 % off the base fare (5 % in Business Class, Premium Economy and fully flexible economy fares; 2 % on Economy Standard). Unlike most corporate contracts, Embarq has no minimum spend or head-count thresholds. Air Canada executives say the offer will likely be extended beyond December once initial feedback is in. For SMEs that have struggled to police travel policy, the portal brings enterprise-grade controls: administrators can restrict cabin classes, set maximum fares, appoint travel arrangers and segment travellers into teams for easier cost-allocation. Contractors can be added as guest travellers, although only enrolled employees receive the 50 % points bonus. Because Embarq is embedded in the Aeroplan ecosystem, trips still count toward elite status and existing corporate discounts are protected. Air Canada’s push comes as domestic business travel continues to lag pre-pandemic volumes and rival WestJet courts the same SME segment with its WestJet Biz offering. By eliminating fees and minimums—and promising deeper data—Air Canada is betting it can lock in loyalty before travel demand fully normalises. For Canadian exporters, the ability to layer Embarq savings on top of long-haul discounts to Europe, Asia and Africa could shave thousands off annual travel budgets. SMBs should audit their Aeroplan profiles now: travellers must select the “Business travel” option at time of booking or forfeit both the discount and the points uplift. Finance teams may also want to map Embarq reporting codes to general-ledger accounts to unlock the promised visibility gains from day one.
