EU confirms Germany’s land-border checks will run until 15 March 2027
The European Commission’s Schengen monitoring portal updated its list of internal border controls on 8 October, showing that Germany notified a six-month extension of its checks at land borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. The measure—originally reintroduced in September 2015 at the height of the refugee crisis—will now run at least until 15 March 2027. Berlin argues that sustained irregular migration, people-smuggling networks and pressures on asylum facilities constitute a “serious threat to public order and internal security.” The extension allows federal police to continue spot-checks on trains, buses and cars within 30 km of the frontier, as well as targeted controls at small airports and ports. For cross-border commuters and logistics companies the practical impact is moderate but real: expect occasional delays, especially on the Bavarian-Austrian and Saxon-Czech corridors where most interceptions occur. Carriers should ensure drivers carry passports or EU identity cards; third-country employees must have their residence permits on them. Failure to produce documents can result in on-the-spot fines or temporary detentions. Business-travel managers should build buffer time into itineraries for road or rail journeys that cross the German border and notify travellers that Schengen’s “no-controls” principle is still partially suspended. Companies moving goods under just-in-time schedules may want to review alternative routes or apply for the federal police’s Trusted Carrier status, which speeds up customs-adjacent inspections. Politically, Germany’s move adds momentum to other extensions by Austria, Poland, Denmark and France, fuelling EU debates on the future of Schengen governance. If Brussels opts for stricter scrutiny of long-running controls, businesses could face a patchwork of sudden policy shifts in 2027.
