High-volume motorway A4, the backbone of Italy’s east-west freight corridor linking Turin to Trieste and onwards to Slovenia, will face a series of rolling closures between 9 and 13 October, according to traffic portal InfoViaggiando. The most immediate shutdowns begin at 21:00 on Friday 9 October, affecting the Padova Ovest slip road and the Peschiera interchange, with further closures on the Mestre bypass and the Redipuglia exit scheduled through the weekend. Autostrade Alto Adriatico and CAV—the two concessionaires responsible for the affected stretches—say the works are essential to replace bridge joints and upgrade safety barriers ahead of winter. Diversions will funnel traffic onto the A27-A28 network, adding up to 40 kilometres and 30 minutes to eastbound journeys. For logistics managers, the timing is critical: the shutdown coincides with peak pre-Christmas inventory stocking by Veneto’s manufacturing sector and with heightened tourist traffic for the Barcolana sailing regatta in Trieste. Temperature-controlled cargo heading to Central and Eastern Europe is advised to depart either before 18:00 Friday or after 06:00 Monday to avoid night-time gridlock at alternative exits. The closures also impact passenger mobility. Bus operators FlixBus and Nomago have amended schedules for routes between Venice Marco Polo Airport and Ljubljana, while rental-car firms at Venice and Treviso airports are warning customers to allow extra drop-off time. Looking ahead, further A4 disruptions are planned for late October as part of a €1.2 billion upgrade project that will eventually add a third lane on the Venice–Trieste segment—good news for long-term capacity but a short-term headache for cross-border commuters.
