Spain Extends Internal Border Checks on Arrivals from Italy Until 22 October
An updated list published by the European Commission on 11 October confirms that Spain has prolonged temporary Schengen border controls for passengers arriving by air or sea from Italy through 22 October. The Interior Ministry cites “continued threats to public policy and migration-management challenges” linked to the Ceuta crisis. Controls were first introduced on 8 August following Italy’s own suspension of free movement for travellers from Spain. Under Articles 25 and 26 of Regulation 2016/399 (Schengen Borders Code), Member States may reintroduce internal checks as a last resort for renewable 15-day periods. Spain’s latest notification, its third extension, means passport stamping and additional police questioning will continue at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Valencia, Palma and all Balearic and Canary ferry terminals handling Italian routes. For corporate travel planners, the practical impact is longer arrival queues (average 15–25 minutes) and potential documentation requests proving accommodation or onward travel. Holders of EU residence permits and Spanish digital-nomad visas remain exempt from entry bans but should carry proof of employment to avoid secondary inspection. Airlines such as Iberia and Vueling have adjusted check-in cut-off times for flights from Rome and Milan. Cruise operators MSC and Costa are rerouting some Western Mediterranean itineraries to dock first in Marseille rather than Barcelona, hoping to minimise delays linked to Spanish border formalities. The Commission will reassess proportionality after 22 October; a further renewal could spark legal challenges from travel-industry lobbies, which estimate the bilateral controls have cost €48 million in lost tourism revenue since August.
