Canary Islands warn of renewed migrant surge, urge swift national response
Speaking at Madrid’s Fiesta Nacional reception, Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo sounded the alarm over a fresh spike in Atlantic boat arrivals: more than 3,800 people since 1 September. The regional leader criticised what he called the central government’s “absence of reaction” and cautioned that the European Union’s new Migration & Asylum Pact could entrench a “retention effect” in frontier regions like the Canaries. The archipelago has long been an entry point for West African migrants attempting to reach mainland Europe. In 2024 it recorded 47,000 arrivals—numbers that strained reception centres and forced hotel requisitions. Clavijo fears 2026 could surpass that record if weather conditions remain favourable for the perilous Atlantic route. For businesses with operations in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura the humanitarian pressure translates into practical challenges: heightened Coast Guard priorities can delay inter-island ferries, and police redeployment to migrant-processing tasks may slow passport queues at tourism bottlenecks. Employers should brief travelling staff about possible ID checks on inter-island flights and ferry crossings, particularly non-EU nationals who may be asked to show proof of onward travel. Clavijo also hinted that deportation logistics could overwhelm the islands’ limited flight capacity, indirectly affecting holiday charters and cargo slots. He urged Madrid to activate the solidarity redistribution mechanism included in the EU pact and to finance additional reception infrastructure before winter seas complicate rescue operations. With the Supreme Court curtailing overseas Spaniards’ voting rights and the Ceuta crisis still simmering, migration remains central to Spain’s domestic politics—an environment mobility managers must monitor closely for sudden policy shifts.
