Cyprus moves all residence-permit renewals online from 1 January 2027
The Deputy Ministry of Migration confirmed on Wednesday that every renewal application for a Cypriot residence permit will have to be filed electronically via the government portal gov.cy starting 1 January 2027. The decision marks the next stage of the island’s wider digital-government programme, which has already brought passport appointments, social-insurance records and dozens of other public services into a single online environment. For global mobility managers the change is highly significant. It means assignees, domestic workers, foreign-interest company staff, family-reunification beneficiaries and holders of permanent residence will no longer be able to renew their permits by visiting a migration office. Instead, applicants (or their authorised representatives) must create a CY Login account, upload the required documents and pay the fee online. In-person biometrics will only be requested if the Department specifically summons the applicant, removing a major administrative hurdle for employers whose staff are stationed outside Nicosia. The Ministry argues that full digital submission will shorten processing times by eliminating manual data entry, while also reducing footfall at over-stretched district migration units. According to internal statistics, the pilot phase launched in July cut average renewal times by 30 per cent for applications submitted online. However, relocation advisers caution that the switch-over date falls in the middle of peak post-holiday renewal season. Companies are therefore urged to audit their expatriate population now, identify permits that expire in Q1 2027, and ensure that staff have an active CY Login and the correct PDF versions of employment contracts, rental agreements and health-insurance certificates. Employers who still rely on paper files will need to digitise supporting evidence ahead of the deadline. The Ministry has promised a bilingual helpline and step-by-step video tutorials, but warns that incomplete or incorrectly scanned documents will trigger automatic rejections. Outsourcing providers should clarify with clients who will hold the CY Login credentials, as the account owner receives all system notifications, including payment requests and rejection notices.
