Adverse Weather Delays Irish Ferries’ Dublin–Cherbourg Services
Irish Ferries has issued back-to-back sailing updates warning of significant delays on its Dublin–Cherbourg route. The 19:30 Cherbourg departure of the M/F Inisheer on 15 October ran more than four hours late, while tonight’s 18:30 ex-Dublin sailing on 16 October is already flagged for a three-hour slip. Rough seas in the Celtic Sea are the culprit, according to the operator, which has extended check-in cut-offs and is offering rebooking options. Freight forwarders moving time-sensitive pharmaceuticals and tech components between Ireland and continental Europe may need to reroute via the Rosslare–Dunkirk service or through the UK land-bridge. The delays come at an awkward moment: many firms have shifted cargo to direct EU links since Brexit to avoid UK customs stops, concentrating demand on the Dublin–Cherbourg corridor. Capacity utilisation on the route has averaged 92 per cent this quarter, leaving little slack when vessels fall behind schedule. Passenger traffic is equally exposed. With most schools on mid-term break next week, families and tour groups face the prospect of missing onward rail connections from Paris. Travel managers are advising clients to pad itineraries by at least half a day and to monitor SMS alerts from Irish Ferries. Insurance brokers note that delay-related claims are only honoured when itineraries include a minimum two-hour buffer; companies should review corporate travel policies to ensure employees are covered.
