Immigration Service warns against paid Burgh Quay appointment scams
A public service announcement published today (16 October) on the expatriate information site ‘Hey Ireland’ has highlighted a surge in third-party websites charging foreign nationals for supposedly ‘guaranteed’ appointment slots at the Immigration Service Delivery’s (ISD) Burgh Quay registration office in Dublin. The article cites ISD guidance that no external agents are authorised to book appointments and that all slots remain free of charge via the official online portal. The warning comes amid record demand for first-time Irish Residence Permit (IRP) cards as universities begin their autumn semester and multinational firms on-board Q4 hires. Applicants frustrated by scarce availability have increasingly turned to Telegram channels and social-media ads offering paid bookings—often at €150–€300 per slot. ISD says many of these are fake; some victims only learn they have no appointment when they arrive at the office and are turned away. Under Irish law it is an offence to provide false or misleading information in connection with an immigration application. The Department of Justice confirmed that Garda National Immigration Bureau detectives are investigating several reports of fraud and has urged victims to come forward. Employers sponsoring non-EEA staff should remind assignees that the official system releases slots in batches—typically at 10 a.m. each Thursday—and that monitoring the portal directly is the only legitimate method. Companies may mitigate timing risk by arranging initial permission letters (Atypical Working Scheme or Stamp 0) that allow employees to start work while waiting to register. Longer term, business-lobby group IBEC is calling for an expansion of the regional registration network to reduce pressure on Dublin and for the rollout of biometric self-service kiosks similar to those used in airports, arguing that smoother onboarding is critical to Ireland’s competitiveness for global talent.
