Specialist site AusVisa has published a deep-dive (18 October) comparing the number of nomination places allocated to each state with the much larger volume of ‘Registrations of Interest’ (ROIs) lodged by would-be migrants. For example, South Australia received only 1,700 subclass 491 places but recorded over 6,200 ROIs in Q3 alone, underscoring fierce competition. The article warns applicants not to confuse an ROI with an actual nomination or visa invitation; each step is separate and sequential. Many candidates mistakenly assume that an ROI guarantees them a place and arrange flights or quit jobs prematurely. Mobility advisers should counsel staff on realistic timelines and encourage parallel strategies such as employer sponsorship. The analysis also suggests targeting less saturated states like Tasmania, which had 800 places but only 950 ROIs to date.
