Among the lesser-known provisions in China’s latest visa-free FAQ is a breakthrough for South-East Asian incentive travel: organised tour groups from any ASEAN member state can now enter China visa-free through Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport as well as the Mohan rail and highway ports on the China–Laos corridor. Groups must consist of at least two travellers and be handled by a Chinese-registered travel agency; they may remain in China for the duration of their itinerary under a “team in, team out” requirement. The move dovetails with the opening of the Kunming–Vientiane high-speed railway and is expected to funnel leisure and MICE traffic into Yunnan, Guangxi and onward to the Greater Bay Area. For regional headquarters in Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur that routinely host off-sites in China, the change eliminates a costly administrative step and shortens lead times. Airlines such as Lao Airlines and China Eastern are reportedly evaluating capacity increases on the Vientiane–Kunming and Bangkok–Xishuangbanna routes. Travel managers should note that travellers cannot split from the group or change ports of exit without converting to an individual visa – violations may trigger fines or future entry bans. Nevertheless, the policy adds a flexible gateway for companies staging trainings or supplier audits in China’s fast-growing south-west.
