Germany’s long autumn of transport labour action continued on 19 October as two small but potentially disruptive strikes affected local networks at opposite ends of the country. In Saarbrücken, the train-drivers’ union GDL extended its rolling stoppage at Saarbahn through 31 October, halting roughly 40 % of tram-train services that feed into Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance network. Passengers commuting to Frankfurt and Mannheim must now allow extra time to reach main-line ICE departures. Further north, public-sector union ver.di staged a 24-hour warning strike at Verkehrsbetriebe Kreis Plön (VKP), cancelling most regional bus services around Kiel and the holiday resorts of the Holstein coast. While classified as ‘minor’ on the national Strike Tracker, the walkouts coincide with Germany’s school-autumn break, forcing families and business travellers alike to rely on taxis and car-share platforms. Neither action affects airports, but companies with employees on short-term assignments in the Saarland or Schleswig-Holstein should update intranet advisories and verify taxi-expense policies. The collective-bargaining calendar shows no major national rail or airport strikes in the next 30 days, yet unions warn that escalation remains possible if talks over workload relief and inflation bonuses stall.
