Austria and Bulgaria Pledge Deeper Cooperation on EU External Border Security
Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner met his Bulgarian counterpart Ivan Demerdzhiev in Vienna on 19 October 2026 to chart a tougher common line on the EU’s external borders. According to the Austrian Interior Ministry, the two ministers reviewed recent data showing that tightened patrols and physical barriers along Bulgaria’s land frontier with Türkiye have pushed the number of detected irregular crossings down from almost 15 000 in October 2022 to fewer than 30 so far this month. Much of the discussion focused on legal tools the two countries want Brussels to adopt quickly. Karner argued that the forthcoming EU Pact on Migration and Asylum should include fast-track return procedures and clearer rules that allow member states to turn migrants back at the external border in situations of acute “hybrid” pressure. Both ministers said they would lobby other capitals to endorse proposals expected from the European Commission before year-end. The meeting also addressed operational cooperation. Austria will send additional forensic experts and police dogs to Bulgaria’s border-police academy next month, while Sofia will second liaison officers to Vienna Airport ahead of the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, which Austria will host. The two sides plan a joint exercise in spring 2027 simulating mass arrivals at land and air borders. For Austrian employers, the talks signal that Vienna is unlikely to ease its own internal Schengen checks until it is satisfied that the EU’s external frontier is “air-tight”. Cross-border commuters and corporate mobility managers should therefore plan for continued ID checks on the Austrian-Slovak, Austrian-Slovenian and Austrian-Hungarian borders at least through March 2027, the date of Austria’s current notification to Brussels. Companies relocating staff from the Western Balkans should also note that return and readmission procedures may accelerate once the legal changes Karner seeks are in place.
