EU list confirms Austria’s internal border controls with four neighbours will remain until 15 March 2027
The European Commission’s daily update to the Schengen ‘Temporary Reintroduction of Border Control’ register, consulted on 19 October 2026, reconfirms that Austria’s internal border checks with Slovakia, Czechia, Hungary and Slovenia will stay in force until 15 March 2027. The controls – first re-introduced in 2015 at the height of the refugee crisis – were most recently prolonged on 16 September 2026 under Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code. Vienna cites “continuous threats to internal security posed by irregular migration” as well as pressure on reception facilities and knock-on effects from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The scope covers all land borders and river crossings with the four neighbouring states. While freight traffic continues to use dedicated green lanes, passenger vehicles are subject to random checks, and rail operators must transmit advance passenger data to Austrian police. For multinational companies the extension means that staff travelling overland to Austria for meetings or project work should continue to carry passports or national ID cards and allow extra time at the frontier – especially at peak periods on the A4 (Hungary) and A22 (Czechia) motorways. Employers moving equipment between sites inside the Schengen area should also keep CMR consignment notes handy, as customs officers may seize the opportunity to inspect cargo for smuggled persons. Although the Schengen code limits such internal controls to two-year periods, Austria’s measure has now been rolled over multiple times. The Commission has criticised the practice but stopped short of legal action, pending wider reform of the code. Businesses should therefore factor in the likelihood of further extensions when drafting 2027 mobility budgets.
