The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has refreshed its Switzerland travel advisory, warning of “severe delays” at road crossings between France and the Canton of Geneva during the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Évian-les-Bains from 15–17 June 2026. Although the summit is eight months away, Swiss police have already announced that several minor crossings will close and that ad-hoc passport checks could be re-introduced at open posts. According to the FCDO update dated 20 October 2026, travellers should avoid non-essential trips across the border between 12 and 19 June, leave extra time for security searches and expect rolling traffic restrictions linked to demonstrations authorised in central Geneva. The notice also reminds third-country nationals that the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since April 2026 and may lengthen processing times at external Schengen frontiers. For mobility managers this early signal is valuable. Many multinational firms use Geneva as a hub for meetings linked to the UN and international NGOs; the summit’s security cordon could disrupt airport-to-lake-shore shuttles and cross-border commuters who live in neighbouring France. Companies are already reviewing accommodation blocks and considering shifting events to Basel or Bern during the affected window. Swiss authorities will publish detailed closure maps in March 2027, but they urge drivers to keep identity documents handy and follow realtime updates via the Canton of Geneva’s “Info-Frontières” portal. Airlines expect minimal impact at Geneva Airport, though staff are planning for longer road transfer times to the terminal.
