UAE flight disruptions mount as airlines cancel Saudi routes and delay Dubai-Abu Dhabi services
Corporate and leisure travellers in the UAE faced another day of operational turbulence on 21 October 2026 as dozens of departures were either cancelled or heavily delayed at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport (AUH). Gulf News’ live flight board shows flydubai, Emirates, Etihad Airways and Air Arabia wiping entire rotations to Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Abha, while regional partners IndiGo, SpiceJet and Azimuth posted knock-on delays on South-Asian and CIS routes. Airlines blamed a combination of regional security tensions—after fresh Houthi drone interceptions over Saudi Arabia—and crew/equipment re-positioning challenges. Etihad alone has extended its suspension of all Abu Dhabi–Saudi services until at least 24 October, warning that “further changes are possible as the situation evolves.” Emirates has simultaneously halted its Tel Aviv codeshare with flydubai, a move that forces corporate travellers to reroute through Amman or Istanbul. For businesses, the volatility is more than an inconvenience. Freight forwarders have reported spot air-cargo rate spikes of 12–18 percent on the DXB-RUH lane this week, while professional-services firms told Gulf News that billable hours are being lost as consultants spend longer transiting through alternative hubs. Travel-management companies (TMCs) are advising clients to build 24-hour buffers into itineraries for Saudi projects and to review force-majeure clauses in hotel and rental-car contracts. Practical tips for travellers include using airline apps for real-time notifications, confirming terminal assignments before leaving for the airport, and ensuring ticket numbers—not just PNRs—are handy when seeking re-booking or refunds. Passengers connecting onward from the Gulf are urged to check visa-validity windows: overstaying a UAE transit visa due to a missed connection can trigger an AED 100 daily fine plus AED 250 exit-permit fee. In a region where schedules can shift by the hour, preparedness is rapidly becoming the most valuable travel document of all.
