The European Commission’s updated register of internal Schengen border controls, published on 21 October, confirms that France will maintain temporary checks at all borders – including those with Switzerland – until at least 31 October 2026 as part of its security operation for the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian-les-Bains. French officials began reintroducing controls on 1 May citing terrorist threats and irregular-migration pressures and have now extended the measure through the end of the month to cover the high-profile summit concluding today. Border guards have authority to request passports or national ID cards from travellers on major road, rail and air links between the two countries. While freight traffic has continued, logistics providers report average delays of 15–30 minutes at the Basel/Mulhouse-Freiburg tri-national airport and at the A40 motorway near Geneva. Several multinational companies have advised staff to carry proof of assignment letters and arrive early for meetings in the Lake Geneva region this week. Corporate mobility teams should note that France may prolong controls for up to six months under Schengen rules regulating foreseeable security events. If the extension materialises, assignees who commute daily across the Franco-Swiss border could face ongoing checks into the Christmas season. Employees travelling with Swiss residence permits should ensure their documents are valid for the entire trip; holders of Swiss ‘L’ and ‘B’ permits have reported additional scrutiny when the permits are close to expiry.
