The Office of the President confirmed that President Alexander Stubb undertook a one-day working visit to Oslo on 20 October 2026 at the invitation of Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Talks focused on deepening Nordic labour-market integration and mutual recognition of professional qualifications—issues that stalled after Norway tightened rules for posted workers in early 2026. Officials said the leaders agreed to set up a joint task-force to harmonise digital ID standards used for cross-border e-signatures, a prerequisite for making remote work across the Finland–Norway border administratively seamless. The task-force will report by June 2027, potentially paving the way for an expanded Nordic mobility treaty that would cover short-term gig-economy platforms and seasonal tourism jobs. For employers, easier recognition could reduce onboarding times for Finnish healthcare professionals working in Norway’s northern counties, where vacancy rates exceed 15 %. Conversely, Norwegian energy firms would gain faster access to Finnish engineers for offshore wind projects in the North Sea. No concrete visa or residence-permit changes were announced, but both sides signalled interest in exploring a mutual fast-track entry lane at land borders similar to the Sweden–Norway ‘Gränsbanan’ pilot. Stakeholders can submit views through the Nordic Council Secretariat once the consultation opens next month.
