Finland’s post-pandemic air-traffic recovery continued to gather pace in September, according to a fresh release from Statistics Finland. The agency reports that 1.8 million passengers passed through the country’s 20 commercial airports during the month, a seven-per-cent increase on September 2025. International traffic was the main engine of growth: 1.5 million travellers—roughly 84 % of the total—flew on cross-border services, while domestic demand inched up three per cent. Helsinki Airport remained the undisputed hub of Finnish aviation, accounting for 89 % of all passengers and almost the entirety of freight. The capital gateway handled 1.6 million travellers and 18,341 tonnes of cargo and mail, underscoring its role as a northern transfer point between Europe, Asia and North America. Regional airports also posted solid growth, buoyed by Lapland’s year-round tourism push and improving feeder links to Helsinki. Nine-month data show a broader positive trend: from January to September 2026, Finnish airports welcomed 16 million passengers, up six per cent on the same period last year. Air-freight volumes climbed 14 % to 155,708 tonnes, helped by recovering electronics and pharmaceutical exports that favour Helsinki’s specialised cool-chain facilities. For global-mobility managers the figures confirm that Finland’s connectivity is steadily normalising, reducing the need for circuitous routings that dominated immediately after Russia closed its airspace in 2022. While Asian long-haul capacity is still constrained, trans-European and trans-Atlantic frequencies are approaching pre-crisis levels, improving schedule flexibility for business travellers and assignees. Looking ahead, Helsinki Airport’s winter timetable will feature new long-haul services by Emirates and additional European routes by both network and low-cost carriers. If the current growth trajectory holds, Finavia expects total passenger numbers to break the 20-million mark in calendar-year 2026—still short of the 25 million achieved in 2019, but a significant milestone for Finland’s travel and relocation ecosystem.
