Air-traffic recovery accelerates: Finnish airports handle 1.8 million passengers in September

Statistics Finland released fresh transport data on 21 October 2026 showing that Finnish airports served 1.8 million passengers in September, up 12 % year-on-year and just 6 % below the pre-pandemic benchmark of September 2019. Helsinki Airport accounted for 89 % of all travellers and nearly all international cargo tonnage. The growth was driven primarily by long-haul connections to Asia, with passenger numbers on Japan and South-Korea routes up 34 % compared with September 2025. Domestic traffic remained flat, reflecting the continued shift to rail for Tampere and Turku business trips. For global-mobility teams, the data signal that seat availability—and therefore airfare volatility—will improve on key intercontinental routes in the winter timetable. Finnair has already added a sixth weekly frequency to Tokyo Haneda from November and reintroduced daily service to Dallas to feed the Oneworld network. Despite the rebound, Helsinki Airport’s operator Finavia warns that ground-handling capacity is tight during morning peaks; companies should advise travellers to arrive at least 2 hours before Schengen flights and 3 hours before non-Schengen departures. Finavia’s new biometrics-enabled smart-security lanes, scheduled to open in December, are expected to cut screening times by up to 30 %. The positive trend supports the government’s target of returning to 22 million annual passengers by 2028, a key assumption underpinning the €550 million Terminal 3 expansion financing package.
