Italy reports 3,300 new migrant arrivals in October as year-to-date landings top 26,000
The Italian Ministry of the Interior’s daily “cruscotto statistico” released on 29 October confirms that 3,312 people have arrived by sea so far this month, bringing total landings in 2026 to 26,231. Although the figure is well below the 2025 record of 58,000, officials say arrivals remain “structurally high” and concentrated on Lampedusa and Calabria. Interior-ministry analysts note that Bangladeshis (23 %), Algerians (13 %) and Somalis (11 %) make up almost half of this year’s arrivals. The growing share of Asian migrants reflects new trafficking routes that shift embarkation from Libya to Egypt and Turkey, where Bangladeshi networks operate. The ministry is redeploying 120 extra border-police officers to Lampedusa and intends to double charter-flight capacity for forced returns in November. For employers, the numbers matter because humanitarian-status holders can apply for work permits six months after filing an asylum claim. According to Confindustria, the manufacturing association, shortages in logistics and food processing could be partially offset if even 20 % of this cohort enters the labour market in early 2027. Companies are therefore advised to monitor prefecture guidance on converting asylum receipts into work authorisations. From a compliance perspective, mobility managers should plan for longer lead-times when onboarding third-country nationals transferred to Italy. Police headquarters (Questure) in Sicily and Apulia currently quote 90-day waits for fingerprints and the first residence-permit appointment. The Interior Ministry says it will trial remote pre-enrolment next month, but this will initially cover only humanitarian applicants, not family or intra-company transferees. Finally, EU partners will watch the data closely. Under the “voluntary solidarity mechanism”, Spain and Germany agreed to relocate up to 4,000 asylum seekers from Italy in 2026. If arrivals accelerate in November–December, Rome is expected to ask for a higher quota at the next Justice and Home Affairs Council, potentially affecting onward business travel within Schengen.
