Expats.cz reports that while the Blue Card salary floor has risen to CZK 73,823, many Czech employers still default to the cheaper, faster Employee Card, depriving skilled recruits of EU-wide mobility and longer validity periods. Under Czech law, an Employee Card can be approved in as little as two months and requires only the labour-market test wage, currently around CZK 41,000 for IT roles. By contrast, Blue-Card processing can stretch to five months and locks salaries to the statutory premium. HR managers therefore weigh speed and cost against strategic benefits such as intra-EU family reunification, easier job changes after two years, and a pathway to long-term EU residence. The Ministry of the Interior hopes that simultaneous digital reforms—most notably an online "Foreigner Account" allowing document uploads and case tracking—will cut Blue-Card timelines below 30 days, restoring the permit’s appeal. Until those efficiencies materialise, however, specialists risk arriving on Employee Cards that limit onward mobility and extend their road to permanent status. For businesses, the practical takeaway is to segment talent pipelines. Senior software architects or R&D leads who may later relocate within the EU still merit the Blue Card despite higher salaries, while volume junior hires can remain on Employee Cards. Clear communication is essential so that candidates understand why they are placed on one track or the other and how it affects spouses’ work rights and children’s schooling eligibility.
