Travellers heading to Spain must now be able to show at least €122 for every planned day of stay, with a hard minimum of €1,099, under revised entry rules published this week by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The amounts—previously €118 per day and €1,065 overall—were revised to track January’s rise in Spain’s national minimum wage (SMI). The policy applies to all third-country nationals, including passport holders from visa-waiver states such as the UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States. At border inspection points officers may request cash, recent bank statements, credit-card limits or certified traveller’s cheques. Failure to demonstrate sufficient resources can result in immediate refusal of entry even when a Schengen visa is already in the passport. Business associations are urging companies to brief travellers in advance and issue corporate “letters of financial support” where appropriate. The higher floor particularly affects short business trips of under 10 days, where the flat €1,099 minimum now translates into roughly €1,100 for a weekend meeting—up almost 9 % year-on-year. Digital nomads and start-ups courting foreign clients must also factor in the requirement when flying in prospective investors, as hospitality invitations do not waive the cash test. Spain links its proof-of-means rule to 10 % of the monthly SMI for each day, so any future wage hikes will automatically ripple through. With the SMI projected to rise again in early 2027, mobility managers should build indexing clauses into travel budgets. Meanwhile, airlines have started reminding passengers of the updated figures during online check-in, aiming to reduce front-of-desk confrontations at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat. For global mobility teams, the practical advice is simple: add an extra €5-10 per day buffer, carry recent digital bank statements on a phone and, where possible, book fully-refundable accommodation to avoid being questioned about prepaid expenses.
