Helsinki Airport breaks passenger record as summer holiday rush begins
Finavia, the state-owned airport operator, reported on 16 June that Helsinki Airport handled some 378,000 passengers during the first week of Finland’s school holidays (1–7 June), the highest weekly total since the pandemic. The following week was almost as busy, signalling a robust rebound in leisure and connecting traffic despite lingering cost-of-living concerns and volatile jet-fuel prices. Finavia attributes the surge to three factors: pent-up outbound demand, a 9 % year-on-year increase in transfer traffic on Asian and North American routes, and the launch of several seasonal services, including Finnair’s new Helsinki–Osaka rotation and Norse Atlantic’s Helsinki–Los Angeles flight. “Operational reliability has stayed high and kerosene availability is stable,” said Senior Vice-President Petri Vuori, dispelling market rumours that global fuel-supply constraints could disrupt Nordic hubs. For corporate travel managers the numbers are a mixed blessing. Higher volumes mean fuller flights and fewer last-minute seats in business class, but they also reinforce Helsinki’s status as a competitive transfer hub – vital for companies relocating staff to Asia-Pacific projects. Finavia has expanded security lanes and reopened the former Terminal 2 departures hall as an overflow check-in zone to keep average processing times below 15 minutes.

Before heading to the airport, passengers who still need to secure travel documents can turn to VisaHQ, which provides fast online visa and passport services along with real-time application tracking; its dedicated Finland page (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) helps business travellers and holiday-makers avoid embassy queues and last-minute surprises.

Travel-risk consultancies recommend that expatriate families departing around Midsummer arrive at least three hours before departure and pre-book parking. The airport’s biometric Fast Track gates remain reserved for FINAVIA Priority and ABM card-holders; however, Finavia confirmed it is piloting a digital identity wallet for all EU nationals later this year, potentially shaving another five minutes off security for frequent flyers. Looking ahead, Finavia expects additional capacity: Emirates-partner Flydubai will enter the market in October with four weekly flights, while Qantas subsidiary Jetstar plans a Helsinki–Melbourne service via Singapore from November. If realised, passenger numbers could surpass the record 21.9 million handled in 2019, underscoring Helsinki’s role in Finland’s wider export and talent-attraction strategy.
