Finnair eyes winter sun: Helsinki–Krabi direct flights proposed for 2026/27
Finnair has filed an application with Thailand’s Department of Airports to operate twice-weekly seasonal flights between Helsinki and Krabi from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. The request, revealed after last week’s IATA Slot Conference in Bangkok, marks the carrier’s return to the southern Thai resort only five years after suspending services because of the pandemic and Russian air-space closures. The move is part of Finnair’s broader Asia pivot. Unable to use the shorter trans-Siberian corridor to East Asia, the airline has doubled down on ‘South-East Asia via the Middle East’ and “Nordic sun” leisure markets. Krabi, a favourite with long-stay Scandinavian tourists and digital nomads, ticks both boxes.

For those same travellers sorting out visas before departure, VisaHQ can streamline the paperwork. Whether Finns need a Thai tourist visa or Thais are planning a return visit to Finland, the company’s Finland portal (https://www.visahq.com/finland/) offers step-by-step online applications, expedited processing, and expert customer support—helping ensure the only queue you face is at the beach bar.

Thailand’s Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit welcomed the proposal, saying Nordic visitors have “one of the highest average spends and longest average stays of any source market.” If approved, flights AY 9 xxx would leave Helsinki on Mondays and Fridays at 17:30, arriving in Krabi at 08:00 the following morning, with returns departing at 10:00 and landing in Finland at 17:00. The airline is expected to deploy its Airbus A350-900 in a 297-seat, three-class layout offering full flat beds in business, the newly refreshed premium economy cabin and a 3-3-3 economy section. Codeshare partner Bangkok Airways would provide onwards connections to Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. For Finnish corporates the link promises faster door-to-door access to manufacturing clusters around Rayong and tourist investments on the Andaman coast. Travel-management companies note that the flight shaves at least three hours off routings via Bangkok or Doha, potentially making Monday-to-Friday inspection trips feasible. In the leisure space, tour operators Aurinkomatkat and TUI Nordic have already signalled interest in block-seating agreements. Industry analysts see the Krabi route as a bell-wether for Finnair’s ability to replace lost North-Asia capacity with southbound leisure demand. With Scandinavians travelling abroad in record numbers again—Finland Airport figures show outbound traffic up 12 % year-on-year in Q1—Krabi could be the first of several new long-haul leisure launches for winter 2026/27.
