New Residence-Permit Codes Become Mandatory in Czech Immigration System

New Residence-Permit Codes Become Mandatory in Czech Immigration System
A seemingly arcane administrative change that took effect on 1 June 2026 becomes operational reality from today, 20 June, as all regional Interior Ministry offices switch their software to the expanded set of numerical codes for Czech long-term visas and residence permits. The codes—used on decision letters, ID cards and the new online ‘Foreigner Account’ platform—grow from 16 to 24, adding separate identifiers for intra-company transferees, researchers, start-up founders and family members of EU Blue Card holders. Why it matters: the codes drive which documents applicants must file, how fast files move and how employers report payroll data to social-security authorities. Foreign HR managers who keep using outdated codes risk rejection or processing delays. From Monday the ministry’s reservation portal will refuse appointments booked with obsolete labels. According to the Interior Ministry’s information portal for foreigners, the update is part of a broader digital migration reform that will ultimately allow fully paper-less renewals by early 2027.

VisaHQ, an established visa and immigration services platform, is already aligning its Czech Republic support tools with the new coding matrix. Through its online portal (https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/) companies and individual travelers can verify the correct ‘purpose’ number, generate up-to-date document checklists and schedule ministry appointments, helping clients sidestep the grace-period pitfalls highlighted above.

The system already pre-populates tax-number requests and health-insurance enrolment, cutting a week off typical onboarding times. Practically, companies that sponsor Employee Cards should update template employment contracts to reference the new ‘purpose 23 – Highly Qualified Employment’ code and should coach assignees to select the correct option in the Foreigner Account wizard. Universities hosting researchers must now tick ‘purpose 18 – Research and Development’, which replaces the generic ‘scientific stay’ tag. Officers in Prague and Brno told the Czech-German Chamber of Commerce that a two-week grace period ends today; files with wrong codes will henceforth draw a formal request for clarification, resetting statutory processing clocks. In short: check your codes before hitting ‘submit’.
