Stricter Financial Thresholds Introduced for Non-EEA Family Reunification

Stricter Financial Thresholds Introduced for Non-EEA Family Reunification
Quietly published on 12 June but taking centre stage in global-mobility circles this week, amendments to Ireland’s Non-EEA Family Reunification Policy will make it significantly harder for many work-permit holders and even Irish citizens to sponsor relatives. Key among the changes is a near-doubling of the required gross income for Irish citizens seeking to reunite with spouses or minor children—from €40,000 over three years to €75,000.

General Employment Permit (GEP) holders must now supply detailed evidence that they can house family members in suitable accommodation, and all sponsors become ineligible if they themselves are in State-supported housing. Refugees and subsidiary-protection beneficiaries, meanwhile, face a mandatory two-year wait before qualifying to apply for family reunification under the new International Protection Act. The policy shift follows months of political pressure over accommodation shortages and comes against the backdrop of a €1.1 billion budget for the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) in 2026. Advocates fear the tougher rules will force skilled migrants to reconsider Ireland as a long-term destination, particularly in sectors already grappling with retention issues. Corporates should note that dependants’ applications submitted on or after 20 June will be assessed under the new rules, irrespective of when the principal employee arrived. Mobility teams are advised to pre-screen assignees’ housing arrangements and financial records well before initiating family applications, and to budget for longer document-gathering lead times as new bank-statement and tenancy-agreement requirements bed in.
