Record Heatwave Forces SNCF to Cut Services and Reroute TGVs
France’s national rail operator SNCF spent the night scrambling to keep its network moving after rails buckled and overhead cables sagged in 40 °C heat. At Paris-Montparnasse—hub for west-bound high-speed services—track deformities in Eure-et-Loir on Sunday evening triggered cascading delays of up to 140 minutes and forced several Atlantic-axis TGVs onto slower classic lines. Jean Castex, the company’s CEO, told BFMTV that more than 3 500 technicians were “patrolling the network day and night” to spot overheated rails and caténaires before they fail. Preventive speed restrictions are now in place on most inter-city routes, while the Intercités Nantes-Lyon line and several Paris-Bordeaux departures were simply cancelled.

In the meantime, corporate travel departments juggling rail upheavals can at least simplify the paperwork side of any last-minute itinerary changes. VisaHQ’s France portal (https://www.visahq.com/france/) lets companies and individual travellers secure visas, passports, and other travel documents entirely online, so delegates can stay on schedule even when the trains are not.

Business-class rail passengers report automatic rebooking, but ordinary users must claim refunds or travel a day later. For corporate mobility managers the disruption comes at a delicate moment: June is France’s peak season for executive relocations and international conferences. Employers have been advised to book flexible fares, allow at least one extra hour between rail and flight connections, and brief travellers on heat-related health risks.

Looking ahead, SNCF Réseau is accelerating plans to roll out heat-resistant steel sleepers and remote-temperature sensors across 2 000 km of high-speed track by 2028. Until then, every extreme-heat episode will mean slower trains and possible last-minute cancellations—costing French business millions in lost productivity and duty-of-care expenses.
