Qantas Adds 45,000 Seats to Japan and New Zealand Routes for Peak 2026-27 Season
Qantas Airways will significantly boost its international network this northern-winter, adding more than 45,000 seats on services to Tokyo–Narita and Queenstown between December 2026 and March 2027. According to the carrier’s filing in Aviation Week’s daily network update, Melbourne–Narita frequencies will rise from daily to eleven flights per week, delivering roughly 30,000 additional seats. Trans-Tasman capacity will also expand, with extra wide-body rotations from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Queenstown and a 10 % up-gauge on Sydney–Auckland services. Japan is Qantas’ third-largest long-haul market and continues to rebound strongly; passenger volumes grew 8 % year-on-year between October 2025 and March 2026. The extra flights reinstate much of the capacity that was trimmed when fuel prices spiked in late 2025, and they give Australian corporates more same-day connectivity into Tokyo’s business districts. Flight timings have been optimised for onward Star Alliance and Jetstar Japan connections, easing itinerary planning for regional business travellers.

Before corporate travellers or holidaymakers lock in these new flights, it's worth double-checking entry requirements for Japan and New Zealand. VisaHQ’s online visa and passport services (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) streamline the application process for Australian passport holders, providing up-to-date guidance, electronic applications where available, and real-time status tracking—saving travel managers time and avoiding last-minute surprises.

For mobility managers, the announcement unlocks more inventory in a market that has been capacity-constrained since the pandemic. Corporate fare desks should refresh negotiated rate calendars and monitor seat-allocation windows, as the new frequencies will progressively load into GDSs from 3 July. Travellers returning from year-end postings in Asia may now bypass Sydney by routing directly through Melbourne, potentially shaving two hours off total journey time. Looking further ahead, the increases reveal Qantas’ strategy to shore up one-stop Asia traffic even as Project Sunrise ultra-long-haul services loom in 2027. The airline is signalling that Japanese and New Zealand growth will not be sacrificed once Sydney-London and Sydney-New York nonstop flights commence. Travel buyers should therefore expect continued competition—and sharper pricing—on these corridors through 2027.
